Local Young Farmer’s Remarkable Recovery Inspires Charity Fundraiser for Stroke Ward

In April  2023, Jeff Barratt, 34, experienced a life-changing stroke, setting him on a challenging journey of recovery at George Eliot Hospital’s Felix Holt ward. After spending four months there, from May to September, Jeff credits the ward’s dedicated team for his significant strides in mobility and recovery.

“The team at Felix Holt were just fantastic,” Jeff shared. “They helped me every step of the way and went above and beyond, even arranging a special visit with my son, who was born at George Eliot Hospital while I was still an inpatient.”

Motivated by the care he received, Jeff decided he wanted to give something back. With the help of his family and friends at Brandon and Wolston Young Farmers Club, where Jeff had served as chairman for two years and had been a member and is still an advisory member since the age of 13, they set out to raise funds to support the hospital. Over twelve months, from September 2023 to September 2024, the club organised a series of events, including their annual Bonfire and Fireworks Night and Skittles evening, ultimately raising an impressive £3,716.

On Saturday, November 9, 2024, the club presented a cheque to Felix Holt ward Therapy Assistants Kelly Ridgway and Gail McCurry at Brandon and Wolston’s 75th Young Farmers Ball held at Hilton Hotel, Coventry.

Reflecting on the fundraiser, Jeff expressed deep gratitude. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the Felix Holt team,” he said. “It’s been incredible to see my community come together to support the place that helped me regain my independence.”

Jeff continues to attend outpatient appointments at George Eliot Hospital as he completes his recovery journey. His story stands as a testament to the impact of dedicated healthcare teams and the power of community support.
