Respiratory patients at George Eliot Hospital received a meaningful boost on COPD Day, thanks to a generous £100 donation from the late Leslie Perkins. His contribution allowed the George Eliot Hospital Charity to purchase 144 handheld fans, bringing relief to patients struggling with breathlessness.
The idea for the donation stemmed from Leslie’s interaction with Laura Richards, a Respiratory Physiotherapist who supported him and his wife, Pat, in their home. Laura introduced Leslie to fan therapy, a simple yet effective tool for helping breathlessness. Inspired by its impact on his condition, Leslie approached Laura with the idea to fund handheld fans for other patients.
The fans were first used during a Singing for Breathing session held in the hospital’s chapel for respiratory outpatients. This innovative program combines the therapeutic benefits of singing with practical tools to manage breathlessness, and the fans quickly proved invaluable during the session.
Pat Perkins, Leslie’s wife, expressed her joy and pride in knowing how the donation was being used. “It’s wonderful news to hear that Leslie’s donation has helped others. He would have been very happy to know he’s made a difference for people suffering from similar conditions,” she said.
The George Eliot Hospital Charity highlighted the impact of Leslie’s generosity. “This is a perfect example of how a thoughtful act can directly improve the lives of our patients. The fans have already provided immediate relief during today’s session and will continue to do so for many others,” said Sanjay Jagatia, Fundraising Manager for the charity.
Lisa Taylor, COPD Clinical Nurse Specialist and Lead for the Respiratory Early Discharge Service (REDS), emphasised the value of such initiatives. “Managing chronic respiratory conditions like COPD requires a holistic approach. Small tools like handheld fans, combined with innovative programs like Singing for Breathing, make a meaningful difference in improving quality of life for our patients,” she explained.
The fans will continue to be distributed to respiratory patients across the hospital, serving as a lasting reminder of Leslie’s kindness and dedication to helping others.
Leslie’s legacy shines brightly, inspiring those around him to give back in their own ways. As Pat reflected, “It’s comforting to know that Leslie’s gesture is bringing relief to others—it’s exactly what he would have wanted.”
